Olive Oil as Part of Diet
and Reducing Cholesterol
My friend told me to eat foods
with more Olive oil to help reduce cholesterol and
that Olive oil will not make me fat. Should I use
more Olive oil. I’m concerned because any oils are
loaded with extra fat and calories.

Dear Judy
Both you and your friend are
right. Olive oil in small amounts has been shown to
reduce cholesterol. That’s because polyunsaturated
or monounsaturated oils are often called the good
fats because small amounts may actually help reduce
cholesterol level. Olive oil is classified as
monounsaturated oil and is preferred
because it lowers LDL cholesterol
(bad cholesterol)
without lowering HDL cholesterol , the good
cholesterol.
When you are dieting, you still
must manage calorie intake and even Olive oil is
high in calories, so my advice is to use it but use
it sparingly.
